Central to the creative process is learning through experience, exploration and expressions. Theatre training, experiential workshops, and digital storytelling are all ways that the Ensemble reaches out to thousands of young people, students, life-long learners and artists around the world. We conduct masterclasses and workshops in collaboration with our partners — which include conservatoires, universities, schools and development agencies. The Ensemble’s workshops are practical, rigorous, playful, and skill-based, built on clear frameworks that have been tested in the world of theatre practice.
The ensemble’s learning strands have been developed from a tapestry of theatre projects and further enriched by the Ensemble’s forty years of teaching in 74 countries.
“As a teacher David Glass pushed me completely out of my comfort zone, but I achieved more than I ever thought I could.” Emma Williams

“David creates a space that enables creativity and an ability to explore feelings free of judgment. This gives us an unprecedented freedom. Those precious keys opened new doors in my life and my career.” Jalal Ablaroubi
Rooted in the training and practice of David Glass’s own teachers — Jacques Lecoq, Jerzy Grotowski, Augusto Boal, Peter Brook, Mike Alfreds, Phillipe Gaulier and Alvin Ailey — our teaching artists conduct practical and rigorous masterclasses, workshops and even long term modules for all levels of performers and students. The learning is always practical and through David Glass’s ethos that training should improve the skill and abilities of students.

Experiential workshops are creative journeys into ourselves and our lives. Life is at its heart creative, and the narratives and emotions that surround us are the stuff that makes our lives meaningful. By exploring a particular theme or provocation, these workshops reveal the particular ideas, concerns, feelings, images and narratives that are the bedrock of your creativity and potential. These workshops are suitable for people from all walks of life and have often led to positive life changing choices or the creation of new projects and work.
David Glass’ teaching in fundamental ‘creative modes’ and his Creative practice are now recognised as powerful learning frameworks and tools, and used around the world in Social development, Education and business. David believes that all humans want is to have relationships with each other, the world around them and themselves. And through this fundamental desire, creativity naturally flows. These workshops teach practical creative and innovative practices and how we can adapt these to personal, project and organisational development. These workshops are rigorous, playful and powerfully transformative.
The explosion of digital storytelling and its creative global reach sit at the heart of an area that the Ensemble embraced wholeheartedly through its establishment of Ensemble Films in 2000. Storytelling is a fast-dying art and this learning strand seeks to reinstate the power of visual storytelling through story development, Film making, Photography and Sound Design. Ensemble Films is led by award-winning filmmaker Robert Golden, BAFTA award-winner John Dale, leading development filmmaker Paul Zetter and Artistic Director David Glass (whose grandfather was leading German filmmaker Werner Dressler).
The Ensemble’s Digital Storytelling workshops are:
